Reflections

A child sat upon its mother’s lap and gazed deeply into her eyes. After a moment, the child said, “Mother, I see myself in your eyes!” Time after time following that initial look, the child was quick to ask the mom, “Am I still in your eyes?” Such is life. You are at times in someone else’s eyes.

Life is truly a wonderful but peculiar partner. It can bring you the greatest joy, but it can also deliver hardened sorrow. Its uncertainty is the very essence of all that makes life what it proves to become for you. In your relationships, actions, work, or communication, there is no escaping the reality of being in someone’s “eyes.”

Each day provides you a golden opportunity to make a difference. An opportunity to bring joy where there may be sorrow by showing how much you care. An opportunity to display the courage of facing and overcoming challenges with enthusiasm and determination. An opportunity to strive toward fulfilling your dreams by molding those dreams into actionable road maps which direct your actions.

What do others see when they look into your eyes? Do they see a life of faith and concern for others that is guided by the reality that today is the only day one possesses? Do they see an individual striving to find solutions to life’s challenges; or, do they see a life that is dedicated to praising problems and promoting victimization?

A legend proclaims that at one time all mankind was like the gods. However as time passed, mankind became offensive and corrupt. The gods gathered to discuss what they might do to hide the “secret of life” from mankind and no longer allow offensive and corrupt action to be taken. One god suggested that it be hidden on the tallest mountain. But then it was decided that sooner or later mankind would climb the mountain and discover it. Another said to hide it in the bottom of the deepest ocean. Following great discussion, that option was set aside because it was thought that mankind would find a way to explore the ocean and uncover the secret. A third god suggested that it be buried deep within the earth. That suggestion soon was also set aside because it was thought man was curious and would dig deep to find the secret. Finally, an astute god suggested, “Why don’t we hide it deep within mankind’s heart? Mankind would not think to look there.” And so it was decided. The “secret of life” was hidden deep within mankind.

  • What do your eyes behold?
  • What success and high potential remain within you?
  • What does life hold for you, those you lead and those you influence as well as those walking through life with you?
  • What dreams remain?
  • What reflection do you truly want others to see as they look into your eyes?

Perhaps it is time you took a look. Life itself may depend on what you uncover.
