Motivation can be self-directed or inspired by outside influences. It is a welcomed companion to achievement. Without it, little ever gets accomplished. With it, much can be gained. The final accountability is most often judged on whether or not the impacted party takes the proper action and gets things done as intended.
Motivation is the catalyst that inspires action. It is like the road crew who launches into a thick forest clearing the pathway for a new scenic roadway. With each section that is cleared, it inspires the equipment operators to surge forward in anticipation that soon their hard work will be rewarded. In doing so, they work through challenges that confront them in their efforts and when the end is in sight, they seemingly find that extra supply of energy to push the final rock from the intended pathway and connect the interchange.
Motivation can make the weak stronger. It can provide the downtrodden with hope. It can help deliver that sense of accomplishment and enthusiasm that makes the short feel taller and the unfit more fit. Motivation is that unique reality that makes you unconsciously or consciously depending on the situation, have a burning quest for something or a driving belief in something. It is that certainty that enables you to openly attack that 40 ft. birdie putt for the win.
To be frank, it most often falls on the individual. If the individual is resistant to taking action, little is done. Outside forces can want many great things for someone. However, wanting more for the individual than the individual wants for themselves is not a winning formula. Thus, motivation is perhaps most effective when the individual finds that internal spark that lights the fire within. As Malcolm Forbes found, “Without push, pull’s useless.”
