Business Moment:  It’s Not What You Have Done, But What You Will Do That Matters

Robert Chalmers, who was president of a small very successful communications firm, once told a story about himself. He remarked that when he was a young person starting out, he would sell people on his ability. He had graduated from an Ivy League school and was a Phi Beta Kappa. He had held a succession of increasingly important positions in his chosen field. As he progressed, he would tell prospective bosses and they generally bought it, that he had “proven ability.” Chalmers noted that he was very pleased with himself until one day when he made his spiel to a well experienced senior executive. After listening to his declaration, the executive laughed and said, “Son, let me tell you something. Ability, even proven ability, is what you did yesterday. It doesn’t say a thing about what you’ll do tomorrow. If I hire you, it won’t be for your proven ability. It will be because I think you’ll work hard for me.”

It is not what you have done but more importantly it is what you will do. People are more interested in what you will do. As you work with your clients or with others in your business or chosen profession, don’t dwell on past accomplishments but focus on what needs to be done tomorrow and in the future to enable you to become a viable added-value asset to others.

Feature Article: Hey, Just Do It!

As time progresses, the more I realize that Nike has it right: "Just Do It!" Too often in today's society, regardless of our role, it becomes apparent that procrastination has taken an unfortunate foundational place in our lives. Even with technology at our fingertips, too many of us fall short in engaging those "great ideas" in a timely manner. Delay, even after enhanced affirmation of needed action, seems to be relevant. Could it be fear due to a limiting belief or past experience? Could it be a lack of self-confidence or regretfully, simple "laziness" that causes our hesitancy? Whatever the issue, it can cause us to sit idly by.

Regardless of how we place it, unless we are willing to step forward on our ideas, plans or dreams, we will never know what can be. Action makes the difference.... Click Here to Read More

Energy Leadership: Got Happiness?

Energy Leadership

The last issue of our newsletter talked about one of Bruce D Schneider’s 10 keys to being unreasonably happy – recognizing and accepting your moods and knowing that they will change.

Let’s take a look at Bruce’s fourth key to happiness - appreciate variety and anticipation.

For most people, variety is truly the spice of life. Many people complain of boredom and burnout because they do the same things again and again. Changing your life, even slightly, can go a long way to making you happier. After all, life is change, and change is inevitable. Knowing how to make change work for you is a valuable key to happiness. Sign up for a class, explore new interests, meet new people, and pursue your passion. Set a goal and make it happen!

Anticipation, at first, may seem contradictory to “being in the moment,” something that’s often thought of as being essential for happiness. After all, how can we be in the here and now when we’re thinking about the future? There’s a line in the song “Anticipation” by Carly Simon – “We can never know about the days to come, but we think about them anyway…”  That’s true for almost everyone – but the way that you think about future events is what separates those who are unreasonably happy....Click Here to Read More
