Business Moment:  Goals

You need a goal to give you a sense of accomplishment. Goals make work more fun and provide a sense of purpose. They make you take action and give you determination. Thus, goals lead you to someplace.

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes was a true believer in goals and challenges. His life and insight have provided many learning experiences. One such experience occurred during a train trip he was taking. He had misplaced his ticket. As the conductor was waiting for Holmes to find this ticket and seeing the growing frustration on Holmes’s face, the conductor informed the Justice to not worry about it. He was certain that there was a ticket, and if it were not found during the trip, he could simply mail it back to the station later.

The Justice was appreciative of the conductor’s empathy for his situation yet he was still dismayed by his failure to produce a simple ticket. Justice Holmes looked squarely at the young conductor and said, “My problem is not finding the ticket. It is finding out where in the world I am going.”

Do you know where you want to go? Only goals can provide you the clear picture of where that destination lies. To be successful, you need a mission and the dedication to make the mission become a reality. Set your goals and make your dreams come true.

Feature Article: The Untold Meaning of Christmas

At this special time of the year when you strive to focus your mind and energies on the fulfillment of the holiday spirit, it becomes easy to get caught in the grasp of the “Christmas Crunch.” You can find yourself voicing your disagreement over the failure to obtain that special gift on line or find another in a store that is packed with people busily shopping for gifts no one will use. To further complicate matters, it seems that every driver on the roadway is crazy. Horns blow and tempers can rise without warning. Disgust can even find its way on the home front if decorations don’t turn out well or this year’s tree falls short of expectation.  However, if you could simply take a short pause, catch your breath and sidestep the Christmas hustle and bustle, you just may discover that despite all the potential rudeness and push, that there remains much to be thankful for this special season.

One of the most remarkable Christmas stories I have heard... Click Here to Read More

Energy Leadership: Forgiveness

Energy Leadership

Last month’s issue discussed forgiveness, and how forgiving others releases the catabolic energy of judgment in order to allow ourselves to move forward. This month, we’ll take a look at self-forgiveness, an infinitely more difficult, involved, and potentially rewarding process.

How many of us beat ourselves up, over and over again, about – well – everything! I should have done this differently or better, I shouldn’t have done that at all, I shouldn’t have said what I did, I should have expressed what I really felt. If only I were a better person (mother, father, spouse, friend, coworker, boss) I’d have reacted differently, if only I had studied harder, if only I had cared more, if only I had cared less. Why didn’t I take a stand, why didn’t I reach out to a friend? Should have, shouldn’t have, if only, why didn’t I….and you can fill in your own words. However you phrase the thoughts that you castigate yourself with, it’s catabolic energy that keeps you stuck and holds you back.

We have an easier time forgiving other people than we do ourselves...Click Here to Read More
