Whiners v.s. Winners

I recently came across an article on how to complain positively. The essence of the article stated that the old adage of “…attracting more flies with honey than you would with vinegar…” really does work! The challenge is that too often you revert to “whining” rather than “winning” in your efforts. Thus, your complaints so often go poorly; or, in disgust, you simply walk away and say nothing about poor service or improper activity that you experience.

The article had a breakdown of what “whiners” do versus what “winners” do as it pertains to life and all that impacts you in your efforts to stay on life’s successful course. Here are some insights from that list for you to consider. Also remember as a business professional, who you are and who you surround yourself with will greatly determine whether you impact the lives of clients and others or simply attempt to impress those closely associated with you.

WHINERSBring other people down. Expect others to cater to them. Want others' opinions to be what they want to hear. Are pessimistic. Try to justify their complaining. Interrupt discussion to make personal comments. Complain about things over which they have no control.

WINNERS:  Inspire others to take action. Expect others to do the right thing. Are willing to hear dissenting opinions. Are optimistic. Have a valid reason behind their complaint. Listen to others’ responses in turn. Complain about things they perceive to be out of control.

As you look at the WHINERS vs. WINNERS characteristics, where did you find yourself falling in this comparison? Most likely in your life, you have experienced both sides of this analysis. Hopefully you find that “whining” really accomplishes nothing; but, it does make your life and the lives of those around you quite miserable. Constant pessimism is not healthy in that it can produce stress. Stress, as you may or may not know, is one of the chief factors in many critical illnesses. It is also the prime factor in the personal downfall disease know as “stinkin’ thinkin’”. Yes, you not only destroy your future; but, the condition has you unknowingly working to destroy the future of others as well. Your justification for misery is that life, business, and all other impactful factors are just not fair! Your theme becomes, “if only…” and the only way you brighten a room is by leaving that room.

Strive to be a “winner” in your life’s journey. Inspire others to take action. Do what you can to positively impact the life of another. Remain optimistic and know that even when you get to the end of your rope, all you have to do is tie a knot in the end and hang on because life will get better! As author, speaker and business consultant Denis Waitley has said, “…Winners believe in their worth in advance of their performance. Winners prepare to win, think like winners, act like winners, and look like winners.” Winning opportunity and optimism await; but, it is up to you to make that a reality!

So, what will it be for you, your business or professional profile? Will you allow your life and career to be swallowed up by “whining” or will you soar to success by being a “winner”? It is a choice that you must make. Remember, only you control what the “you” within can become. Keep your optimism high and avoid feeling that life owes you something special. It doesn’t! You owe life your very best effort each and every day!

Live as a WINNER or live as a WHINER, what will it be for you?
