Friday's Think BIG! Business Success Tip

"Marriott's Secret Formula"

I have always admired the Marriott organization.  They seem to have a fundamental grasp on sound philosophy.  One of my favorite articles has always been Bill Marriott's insight on the vital concepts that have guided the organization since its inception.  The Marriott name has been a symbol of excellence for many generations and I am quite certain that virtually everyone has at one time stayed in one of the many Marriott Hotel varieties worldwide.  Delivering a quality product at a fair price has always been Marriott's goal.  As business owners and leaders, Marriott's formal can be a source of guidance as we strive to make our business operations successful

In the book, The Spirit to Serve which talks about the Marriott history, Bill Marriott has some great tips on success.  These 10 tips are very easily understand, practical and do apply to today's daily business operations despite the market sector you may represent..  Let me share these tips with you in hopes that  in some way they will make a positive difference in how you strive for success or how you view what really matters in your business activities and customer interactions.

—Consistency is essential for a company’s success, which is why good systems are needed.

—Give to your employees and they’ll give back to you. A successful company puts its employees first.

—He who listens well learns well.  Listening is the single most important on-the-job skill that a good manager can cultivate.

—Businesses that hope to be around for the long haul need to find a balance between maintaining order and embracing change simultaneously.

—Don’t be crippled by mistakes.  Instead, learn from them and move on.

—Never believe your own hype—or what the press says about you.

—Celebrate the success of your people—not your own.

—Success is in the details.

—Value the organization more than individual players—success come from teamwork.

— Listen to your heart—and don’t look back.

WOW,  does that not speak to what all owners and leaders should strive to have in their  various business operations?  Is consistency and systems a vital part of success?  Are people in your businesses, those who are making the daily journey with you, worth your time, your efforts and understanding?  How do you know you are listening to your customers calls for help?  How are you listening to the needs of your teams?  How are you embracing change in your business but doing so in an organized and practical manner?  What are you learning from mistakes and far better how are you trying new things so that you can make mistakes?  How do you celebrate?  How are you creating a fun environment? How are you in planning?  Do you really, really put the details to your actions that you should; or, do you simply go through the motions hoping, yes hoping, for success?  Is there an “I” in team within your business or are you utilizing the ideas and efforts of all to build an effective team that strives for success?  Finally, what does your heart tell you about who you are and what you should be doing?  How would others know you are moving forward?   Are you finding excuses for non-action or are you setting examples for what must be done?

The Marriott business pattern has proven successful for approximately 100 years.  Bill Marriott’s 10 Success Principles are sound and ones that can guide you in your business activities to reach your goals and do so in a team directed effort.  As you begin next week,  utilize these principles and build a new pathway that reflects the very best of you and the very best of your business.  Instilling pride and sense of duty will make a difference in your results and how you approach daily tasks.  It demands only that you  remain diligent in your efforts and believe in yourself and your vision; and, be sure to have fun!

Remember working together and forging a partnership with those in your business; striving to achieve your goals; and, meeting your other demanding business needs, you can accomplish more!
