Are You Wearing Your Blinders?

Mules

When I was growing up, I had the opportunity to work around my grandfather’s farm.  One of the great adventures for me was to be around his mules.  Jack and Ned were great workers and enabled my grandfather to always have a virtually perfect garden each year.  They seemed to enjoy the work almost as much as grandfather did.  Being a very inquisitive youngster, I once asked him why he put eye guards on the mules.  He told me those were “blinders” and they were very important because this enabled the mule to remain focused on the garden row in front of them.  Thus, they were not distracted by things that might pop up to their right or left. Just in case they tried, he still had the reins to keep control and pull their head back to where it should be.  Not having straight rows in a garden really does cause problems.  Thus for Jack and Ned to do great work, it was vital they maintain their focus.

In today’s business environment, we too at times need our own “blinders”.  Not that we should hinder ourselves in such a manner that we are not aware of what might be occurring around us; but, to enable us to remain focused on what really matters in our business as well as other related professional or personal matters.  Too often we have a tendency to...
