This month's focus: Imagination

Imagination

“The soul without imagination is what
an observatory would be without a telescope.”
~ H. W. Beecher

If you don’t feel imagination can have a real impact, then take a look at a child at play. A simple stick can become a magic wand or a ball can be held as a source of superhero strength. A teacup and table can be the start of a fabulous party. In fact, how many of us have looked into the mirror holding a brush or other related item in our bathrooms while singing a spirited song? You may not want to admit it, but I would bet a dime to a donut that we have ALL been there at some point in life.

Imagination opens doors to unknown riches. It has been said many times that the most successful men and women in the world have used their imagination. Robert Collier says that those successful people “...think ahead and create those mental pictures in complete details...altering this a bit or that a bit, but steadily building—steadily building.” I often wonder, when reflecting on the United States space travel program, how many scientists at some point utilized their imagination, perhaps seeing into the future to capture what our country evidentially achieved? I would not hesitate to proclaim that as these scientific professionals grew into their roles, they envisioned a world outside the confines of earth and thus allowed these thoughts to drive their enthusiasm to create new avenues of achievement.

A life without imagination is a life locked into the dreaded turmoil that only produces the same dull uncharacteristic flow day after day after day. Without the ability to visualize the potential of what might be, you deprive yourself of worlds that await through the imaginative insight flowing from creative curiosity.

Philip Conley said, “Your imagination has much to do with your life. It pictures beauty, success, and desired results. On the other hand, it brings into focus ugliness, distress, and failure. It is for you to decide how you want your imagination to serve you.” What a great declaration of imagination and how it can guide effort solely based upon what the individual chooses to embrace. Much like the story of the little boy excited about playing baseball. He told himself he was the greatest hitter in the world but three times as he threw the ball in the air, his swings missed. Not to be outdone, the young lad stepped back, smiled excitedly, and proclaimed, “I’m the greatest pitcher who has ever put on spikes!”
